Darfur followups – Jebel Marra
Civilian authorities affiliated with the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) on Thursday warned of a growing outbreak of monkeypox in the Jebel Marra region of Darfur, raising concerns over increasing risks to civilians, particularly children.
In a statement published on its official page, the civil administration in Dera district said new infections continue to be recorded across the region, stressing that current health interventions remain insufficient to contain the spread of the disease.
The authorities urged humanitarian, regional, and international organizations to provide urgent support to the health sector through large-scale vaccination campaigns and the supply of essential medicines and medical treatment needed to curb the outbreak.
The statement warned that the situation could deteriorate further “before it is too late” if immediate assistance is not delivered.
The warning comes amid worsening humanitarian and health conditions across large parts of Darfur due to the ongoing conflict, weakened healthcare services, and shortages of essential medical supplies.
The Sudan Liberation Movement controls large areas of Jebel Marra, as well as Tawila and other territories across North, Central, and South Darfur states.
