Darfur Follow-ups: Nyala
On Thursday, Sudanese army warplanes resumed targeting several sites inside the city of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state.
and preliminary statistics indicate that 10 people were killed and others wounded of civilians they were taken to Nyala Specialized Hospital to receive treatment.
A statement issued by the spokesman for the Rapid Support Forces said, “In continuation of its series of violations against innocent civilians, Al-Burhan militia aircraft committed a brutal massacre by bombing the city of Nyala, causing the death and injury of dozens of citizens and the demolition of their homes.”
The Sudanese army was accused of deliberately targeting the residents of Nyala in an attempt to kill and displace them after the cessation of military operations in the city and the significant return of the population during the past days, in addition to the return of life with the opening of markets, hospitals, some schools and police stations – according to the statement.
He believed that there was no justification for bombing innocent civilians with explosive barrels in Nyala and before that, the Hamra and Kukiti areas in North Kordofan.
Videos broadcast on social media sites showed damage to citizens’ homes and property.
In addition, military sources said that the military operation carried out by military aviation in the city of Nyala targeted what it said were gatherings of alert personnel affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces, planning to transport them to sites of military operations in Khartoum and North Darfur State. Their number was estimated at about six thousand members.
He explained that the sites that were bombed were the northern and southern neighborhoods of the city of Nyala, including the airport neighborhood, where the main headquarters of the Rapid Support Forces and Nyala International Airport were targeted, in addition to sites in Riyadh, factories, and the mawashi market, as well as Karary and Al-Jumhuriya, in addition to targeting positions around and within the leadership of the 16th Infantry Division.
He continued, “The operation achieved its objectives and caused the Rapid Support Forces heavy losses in lives and military vehicles.”
Eyewitnesses said that they saw the bodies of a number of civilians who were transferred to Nyala Hospital, which was recently operated.
Since the Rapid Support Forces extended their control over Nyala, they were quick to assign Colonel Saleh Al-Fouti responsible for commanding the 16th Infantry Division, whose name was changed to the 1st Division.
They also appointed a police director and ordered the police and prosecutors to carry out their duties.
Last October 26, the Rapid Support Forces took control of the headquarters of the 16th Infantry Division of the Sudanese army as the last remaining military sites of the armed forces, bringing the entire state of South Darfur under the control of the Rapid Support Forces.
The Rapid Support Forces control four out of five states in the Darfur region, which are South, West, Central and East Darfur, while the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, is still not under their control after the armed movements that signed the Juba Peace Agreement threatened to fight the Rapid Support Forces if they targeted the city of El Fasher.
The fierce fighting that occurred in Nyala forced most of the city’s residents to flee, and despite the cessation of military operations during the past month, all neighborhoods in central Nyala are still completely devoid of residents.
