The World Food Program announces the cessation of food aid to refugees in Chad next January due to scarcity of funding

Darfur Follow-ups: Chad

The United Nations World Food Program announced the cessation of food aid provided to 1.4 million people in Chad next January, including newly arrived refugees.

Millions in Chad face acute food insecurity and malnutrition – especially children – due to a range of disasters including the impact of the climate crisis, rising food and fuel prices, declining agricultural production, and ethnic tensions, the WFP said in a press release.

The refugee crisis increases pressure on food-insecure communities that are already struggling to make ends meet.

Malnutrition is also a major concern, with 1.36 million children, or 8.6% of children under the age of five, suffering from malnutrition.

The situation among refugee communities is even more alarming, with 90 percent of new arrivals, 77 percent of veteran refugees, and 67 percent of local communities reporting poor food consumption according to the latest emergency food security assessment conducted in eastern Chad.
