Darfur follow-up: Elgeneina
Today, Monday, the city of El Geneina witnessed the launch of a humanitarian aid convoy affiliated with the World Food Programme, to Central Darfur State.
The acting governor of West Darfur State, Tjani Al-Tahir Karshom, said when he received the humanitarian aid convoy that the convoy consists of (34) trucks, carrying more than (1,190) tons of food supplies, for (54) thousand families in the areas of (Romatas) and (Um Shalaya).
He expressed his thanks to the United Nations agencies for their rapid response with urgent intervention to save the humanitarian situation.
Last Wednesday, Karshom visited Central Darfur state, in the presence of Rapid Support leaders in Central and West Darfur states.
They made an urgent appeal to organizations for urgent intervention, and stressed the urgent need of the citizens of Central Darfur to provide humanitarian aid. He also directed the Catholic Relief Organization, which is supervising the distribution process, to distribute aid directly to those in need, and not store it.
The governor-designate indicated that the need is still great, and called on United Nations agencies and foreign organizations to expand the circle of intervention so that aid reaches all those in need, in the states of Central and West Darfur. He said: (Since the outbreak of war in Khartoum more than seven months ago, government institutions have not provided Federal (i.e., humanitarian or health aid to the states of West and Central Darfur).
He thanked the State of Chad and its brotherly people who hosted the Sudanese refugees and provided all facilities for relief to arrive through the western gate. Pointing out that the Rapid Support Forces made great efforts to secure the road linking (Zalingei) and (El Geneina).
On the other hand the representative of the Catholic Relief Organization (Abbas Haroun) said that West Darfur State has made great efforts to facilitate the arrival of relief to Central Darfur State.
